Tutorial version 1

Ventrilo Setup Tutorial for client version 3.0.1

Hello, Narse here from your friendly WoW guild, Booty Bay Bootleggers. I'm going to explain how to set up your ventrilo client so you can join in on the fun of full guild 5-man and raid instances! All settings indicated by are the settings I have.

They work for me but you are free to use or not use some settings if you choose and change the settings so they work for you, no need to be a sheep :P

Ventrilo Installation Setup

1. First and foremost you need to have the Ventrilo client located here: http://ventrilo.com/download.php
You want to make sure you download the CLIENT version, not the server version, unless you will be setting up your own Ventrilo server someday.

2. Install the client. After you've installed the client open the program and you can follow along with the pictures provided as I explain.

Username Setup

1. Click the arrow next to the Username dropdown menu.

2. Click New in the Setup User window.

3. Pick a name for yourself. Something we might be able to easily identify you by so someone doesn't kick you off the server. Your character name is usually a pretty good idea.

Server Setup

1. Click the arrow next to the Sever dropdown menu.

2. In the Connection Editor window click New.

3. Name the server. You can call it whatever you want, but I've usually just called it something close to the name of the guild, e.g. Booty Bay Bootleggers, BBB, BBBootleggers, etc.

4. Type in the information for the 'Hostname or IP,' 'Port number,' and 'Password' found in the Guild Information or the Guild Message of the Day.

5. Your Ventrilo should now look like this. You may now click Connect.

6. You should now be connected as shown here.

Speech Setup

1. Click the Setup button. Note: I'm going to explain a Push To Talk setup, you do not have to do this but follow along anyway as this is the only way I'm explaining the setup.

2. These are the default settings, notice the circled area, Push To Talk.

3. Uncheck the box indicated by the picture above.

4. The Silence time and Sensitivity section should not be grayed out any longer. Now pull the dropdown menu from the Silence time and select 0.5 seconds.

5. Change the Sensitivity to something lower or higher depending on your microphone. Mine is set to 18.

6. You can now recheck the box for the Push To Talk indicated above

7. Check the box for Use Direct Sound indicated above.

8. Select the dropdown menu for Mixer and select the audio device of your choice that is installed on your computer (if you have more than 1) indicated above.

9. After selecting the Mixer in the Hardware input mixer (Optional) area the Mux and Line should selected by default.

10. Since we're using a Push To Talk you'll want to select the Hotkey area and pick a key or button that you will use when talking. Mine is set to my middle mouse button (button 3) shown in the picture above.

11. Go to the Test button. Click it. This enables the audio test feature. Push and hold Mouse: Button 3 and speak into the microphone. There should be a -Begin- and -End- when you hold, speak, let go of the mouse button. There should then be a play back of whatever you just said. If you can't hear yourself very well, chances are other people won't be able to either.

12. To make yourself louder go to the Amplifiers section and move the slider to the right. This will increase the volume of your speech making you easier to hear. Repeat steps 11 and 12 until you are satisfied with your audio. Click OK and you have successfully set up your Ventrilo client, congratulations!

Troubleshooting

1. I still can't get it to work and I've set everything up, what do I do?
You may not have your microphone enabled on your computer. To do this view and double click or right click and go to Open Volume Control. Your Volume Conrol may look like this:

What you want to do is go do what is go to Options -> Properties

In the Properties menu, scroll down until you find the Microphone box and check it

Your Volume Control should now look like this:

An alternative way to get to the Volume Control window is to click the Setup button in Ventrilo and click the Playback (output) button in the System Sound Control Panels just above the OK button.

2. I can hear people but they can't hear me, what do I do?
First, make sure your Microphone plug is in the Microphone jack on your computer. If you're using a USB headset this should not be an issue. If you still aren't coming in at all make sure you're not muted. Most headsets have a volume dial and mute feature. Figure out which is mute and which is not, since there can be different ways companies identify these settings (either a picture of a mic (on) and a picture of a mic with a line through it, e.g. non-smoking sign, (mute) or some have it quite literally ON/OFF or ON/MUTE. Something like that.

3. How do I know if I'm speaking?
Next to your name is a red speaker, if you're speaking and it's coming in, the speaker changes from red to green and has "audio lines" coming out of it. If you are speaking and no one can hear you, try turning up your Outbound setting in Setup -> Amplifiers.

4. How do I get into a group?
All you have to do is double click the Group you want to enter and you will move there.
